1

Turn off the water

Turn off the water

The main shut-off is usually where the supply comes into the basement, on the street side. A lever turns a quarter turn. A wheel turns clockwise until it stops.

2

Open the cold taps

Open the cold taps

Start with the lowest one in the house. This empties the pipes, and the leak slows to a drip.

3

Turn off the water heater

Turn off the water heater

Gas: turn the dial to pilot. Electric: switch it off at the breaker. A heater should not run on an empty tank.
